From the present review, it is evident that small peptides exert towards oral cells and tissues an antitumor activity through apoptosis or selective necrosis of cell lines specifically associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma, an antimicrobial function by maintaining the balance of the oral microbiome, an immunomodulatory function through up and down-regulation of important genes involved in immunoregulatory gene cascades, and finally a cell differentiation function towards major stem cells in the oral cavity, even in absence of growth factors [21, 27,28,29,30,31, 34, 35]
